We sat down to discuss Gillette’s research “Is Nighttime Bracing Effective in the Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)? A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review Based on Scoliosis Research Society Guidelines” with Sara Morgan, PhD, Clinical Scientist.  

The Gillette hip preservation team has the breadth of surgical experience to provide arthroscopic surgery for impingement and labral tears, as well as new and complex open surgical techniques such as periacetabular osteotomies, surgical hip dislocations, femoral subcapital realignment, and various femoral osteotomies including femoral head reduction, reshaping and cartilage grafts. Gillette also offers a unique pre-operative psychology screening to young hip patients.

Emmalynn Sigrist, DO  recently joined the Orthopedics team at Gillette Children’s as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. Dr. Sigrist specializes in treating orthopedic conditions like limb reconstruction, trauma, fractures and hip dysplasia, along with a variety of other conditions 

Katie Peltz, PA recently joined the Orthopedics team at Gillette Children’s. Peltz specializes in treating idiopathic, neuromuscular and congenital scoliosis, along with a variety of other conditions.

With his retirement from clinical practice, Dr. Koop becomes first teacher emeritus. The role will promote the longstanding tradition of training future medical professionals who focus on children with complex needs.

A new year brings change. We celebrate Dr. Steven Koop who retired from clinical practice as 2021 ended.

The method we designed involves using a minor outpatient surgery to “guide growth” of a deformed tibia, gradually straightening the tibia, allowing it to develop more normally, and preventing early fractures that inevitably lead to pseudoarthrosis.

At the Annual Meeting of the International Perthes Study Group (IPSG) in early 2021, organizers announced that Gillette is second in the world in its enrollment of Perthes patients into IPSG studies.

Last spring, in response to COVID-19, services at our James R. Gage Center for Gait & Motion Analysis were temporarily suspended while we worked diligently to create new social distancing and sanitation protocols. Effective this month, we are happy to announce that all gait lab services have re-opened with enhanced safety measures.

A significant portion of the patients who we see at Gillette Children’s have complex, long-term disabilities. But through our Acute Orthopedic Clinic, we also offer care and treatment for patients dealing with injuries and other short-term disabilities.

Dan Miller, MD, recently assumed a role as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Gillette Children’s. Miller completed medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, did his residency at Columbia University Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
