The Minnesota Twins and Gillette team up to raise awareness about disability pride

St. Paul, Minnesota (July 1, 2022) - Gillette Children’s is celebrating Disability Pride throughout July. The hospital is teaming up with the Minnesota Twins for Disability Pride Days at Target Field on Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13.

Governor Tim Walz officially proclaimed July 2022 Disability Pride Month. Disability Pride has been unofficially celebrated in cities across the country since the passage of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 25, 1990. The ADA was only a starting point, and there remains significant room for progress towards a more equitable and inclusive country for all people living with a disability.

Governor Tim Walz officially proclaimed July 2022 Disability Pride Month.

“A cornerstone of Gillette’s work is advocacy to ensure people living with disabilities, and their rights, are respected and celebrated, says Andrea Stoesz, director of external affairs at Gillette. "We support calls to officially designate July as Disability Pride month.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 61 million American adults have some type of disability, while the U.S Census Bureau reports more than 3 million children are living with a disability.

“Having Disability Pride month is essential for children. Ableism is very real, and it can be internalized. It is crucial for children to see people who are like them and have similar experiences loving who they are. If we can start their pride and that acceptance from an early age, the next generation of children will be unstoppable when they grow up,” said Brittanie Wilson communications officer of the Minnesota Council on Disabilities.

A portion of the proceeds from all special theme night tickets purchased for Disability Pride Days at Target Field will be donated back to Gillette Children’s to support our mission. The ticket also includes a Twins Disability Pride baseball cap.
